The Long Reach Community Association will offer martial arts classes from Sept. 11 through Nov. 6 at Stonehouse. The classes in three-circle hapkido are based on movement along three circular planes to apply striking, joint-locking, throwing and pressing techniques against hand and weapon attacks.
The technique draws on difference styles of Korean self-defense and is influenced by other martial arts such as chen tai chi, aikido, jujitsu, bagua, hsingi and mudukwan.
Classes for ages 5 to 11 will be offered from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays; for those ages 12 and older, from 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. The cost is $160 for eight weeks.
A 5 percent discount is offered to those living on Columbia Association-assessed property.
Black fiction club to meet Saturday
The east Columbia library's Black Fiction Book Club will meet at 1 p.m. Saturday to discuss Aftermath by LeVar Burton.
The group meets on the first Saturday of each month. Copies of the books are available at the branch. Registration is not needed.
Extra lane -- The State Highway Administration has begun a $460,000 project to widen Route 108 (Old Annapolis Road) between Howard High School, Centre Park Drive and Phelps Luck Road. The project will create an exclusive right-turn lane along westbound Route 108. The project, which is intended to improve safety and reduce congestion near the school, is expected to be completed by early September, weather permitting. Also at the library -- A reading program for children, "Reading Roadtrip," offers prizes for books read during the summer. Participants can register at the east Columbia branch, 6600 Cradlerock Way. A program is also available for ages 3 and younger, in which parents can read books, magazines or newspapers to their children and earn prizes.

Belly dancing -- The Long Reach Community Association is offering belly-dancing classes for adults through Sept. 10. A beginner class meets from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. Mondays; advanced students meet from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Mondays. The cost is $76 for eight weeks of classes. Pool party -- The Oakland Mills Community Association will hold a pool party Aug. 7 at the Thunder Hill Neighborhood Pool.
