For a jammin' good art time, head to Savage Mill

Historic Savage Mill will hold its second annual "Art Jam at the Mill" noon to 6 p.m. Sept. 22 to Sept. 23.

Artists will talk to visitors about their work.

Live musicians, a caricaturist, stilt walkers and clowns, art and craft workshops, face-painting and other activities are also scheduled.

Admission is free.

The 19th century textile mill houses antique and home furnishing stores, galleries, artists' studios, the Rams Head Tavern, banquet facilities and a French bakery.

Open Arms center holds open house

The Open Arms Christian Child Development Center, 13611 Laurel-Bowie Road, Laurel, will hold an open house 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 5.

Visitors are welcome to meet the staff and tour the facility.

Care is available for infants and toddlers. Before- and after-school care is available for grade-school children, and half-day programs are offered for 3- and 4-year-olds. The new school year begins Aug. 22.

Military

Mobilized -- Army Sgt. Joe P. Killo, son of Randall K. and Elizabeth C. Killo of the Savage area, has been mobilized for deployment to an undisclosed overseas location in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. He is an infantryman normally assigned to the 1st Battalion, 175th Infantry, Fort Dix, N.J.

The Teen Professional Theatre is a four-week intensive summer program for youths ages 13 to 21. The program includes workshops, mentoring and a final performance. www.cctarts.com.

For children -- This month's July children's programs at the Savage branch library, 9525 Durness Lane, include:

"1001 Worms," a program for kids ages 5 to 10 on the usefulness of worms with master gardener Susan Levi-Goerlich, will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday. Registration is required.

Programs for young children -- "Play Partners" for infants and toddlers; "3, 2, Fun!" for ages 2 and 3 with an adult; "Picture Book Parade" for ages 2 to 5; and "Just for Me" for children ages 3 to 5 -- that will be offered through most of the summer. For a complete schedule: 410-880-5978.

Art workshops -- Camellia A. Blackwell, executive director of the International Center for Artistic Development at Historic Savage Mill, is offering Saturday morning art workshops for children ages 5 to 15 11 a.m. to noon Aug. 11, Aug. 18 and Aug. 25 in the New Weave Building of the mill, 8600 Foundry St., Savage. Classes will focus on watercolor and acrylic painting. Children will complete a finished work at the end of each workshop. The cost is $20 a class, including materials.
