Medical apparel sale set for July 9-10

The Howard County General Hospital Volunteer Auxiliary will sponsor a medical apparel sale from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. July 9 and 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 10.

A variety of uniforms and shoes will be for sale in the hospital cafeteria, 5755 Cedar Lane, Columbia.

Proceeds will benefit the hospital?s expansion program.

Qi gong workshop for women Sunday

The Baltimore Centre for Wellness -- Ellicott City, 3691 Park Ave., Ellicott City, will sponsor aworkshop, Creating Health: A Qi Gong Workshop for Women, from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.

Cate Morrill, president of Shoulders Down Inc. and director of Rising Phoenix T'ai Chi in Atlanta will teach easy sets of movements designed to help create a healthy body, reduce stress, restore energy and keep a focused mind.

No previous training is necessary.

Written handouts will be provided.

The cost is $120. Registration is required.

Gluten-free cooking to be focus Monday

Jules Shepard, author of Nearly Normal Cooking for Gluten-Free Eating (www.nearlynormalcooking.com), will share her gluten-free recipes at 7 p.m. Monday at Great Sage Restaurant, 5809 Clarksville Square Drive, Clarksville.

The cost is $18, including ingredients, containers, samples, and a $2 donation to the University of Maryland Center for Celiac Research.

Smoking-cessation campaign planned

The Howard County Health Department in partnership with the Howard County Economic Development Authority is offering information on secondhand smoke and how to quite smoking at farmers' markets next month.

Health Department staff members will be at markets at the Glenwood library from 9 a.m. to noon July 7; at the east Columbia branch from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. July 12; at Mount Pisgah A.M.E. Church, 5901 Cedar Fern Court, Columbia, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. July 17; and at Oakland Mills Village Center from10 a.m. to 2 p.m. July 22.

Registered dietitians from the Health Department's Nutrition Program will be at the farmers' markets July 12 and 17. Information on selecting, storing and preparing produce will be available.

The Parent Resource Place, a program of Jewish Family Services in Howard County, will offer Childbirth B'Yachad, a childbirth preparation course with a Jewish perspective.

Classes are to begin July 9 at the federation offices, Century Plaza 1000, 10630 Little Patuxent Parkway, Columbia.

Caregiver support on fourth Tuesdays The Caregiver Support Group at Winter Growth, 5460 Ruth Keeton Way, Columbia, now meets from 10:30 a.m. to noon on the fourth Tuesday of each month. Information: 410-964-9616.
