Man pleads guilty in tree-expert case

A Virginia man has pleaded guilty to operating a tree-expert business without a license and with false advertising or soliciting by an unlicensed tree-expert business, Maryland Natural Resources Police said Wednesday.

The agency filed the charges against Otis Backe Jr., 58, of Reva, Va., in April after the Maryland Forest Service received a complaint that he had been working in the Davidsonville area. A check of department records showed that Backe is not a licensed tree expert. State law prohibits a person from soliciting, advertising or representing himself or herself to the public as a tree expert or assuming to practice as a tree expert without having a license.

Backe pleaded guilty on June 21 and was fined $570.

30 people arrested on old warrants

The county sheriff's office netted 30 arrests recently in its effort to reduce the number of outstanding warrants. Glen Burnie, Annapolis and Severn were targeted in the sweep June 24, and arrests were made on charges that include traffic offenses and first-degree assault. The 30 arrests helped clear 37 warrants. The sheriff's office's backlog of about 12,000 unserved warrants was a major campaign issue last fall for Sheriff Ronald S. Bateman's predecessor, George F. Johnson IV. About a quarter of the warrants are for people who are out of state, and about 500 are for dead people. Most of the rest are for misdemeanor cases.
