Play it again -- Orioles 3, Yankees 2

June 27, 2007|By PATRICK GUTIERREZ

Guthrie Sharp Early

After right-hander Jeremy Guthrie retired the first six batters he faced, two of them on strikeouts, Melky Cabrera looked to break up his rhythm by attempting to bunt for a hit. Catcher Ramon Hernandez pounced on the ball and fired a strike to first base, just in time to beat the sliding Cabrera. Guthrie retired the next hitter before giving up a single to the No. 9 hitter, Miguel Cairo. He struck out Johnny Damon to end the inning and finished the night with six strikeouts.

Aggressiveness Pays Dividends

Center fielder Corey Patterson led off the bottom of the third with a broken-bat single to left field off Yankees starter Andy Pettitte. He stole second base after the left-hander tried several times to pick him off. Pettitte walked the next batter, Brian Roberts. After a sacrifice bunt by Chris Gomez advanced the runners, Nick Markakis hit a groundout that scored Patterson for the first run of the game. Patterson had three hits and raised his average to .224.

Late-Inning Heroics

Patterson led off the ninth with a walk off reliever Scott Proctor. The next batter, Roberts, lined a single to the opposite field just past third baseman Alex Rodriguez, putting runners on first and second with nobody out. After Gomez made the first out of the inning when Proctor made a diving catch of his bunt, Markakis walked to load the bases. The next batter, Hernandez, drew the game-winning walk.

On Deck

The Orioles and Yankees meet again tonight in the second game of the three-game series. On the mound for the Orioles will be left-hander Erik Bedard, who will oppose Roger Clemens. Bedard is 5-4 with a 3.60 ERA and has a major league-leading 121 strikeouts. Clemens, 44, is making his fourth start of the season after coming out of retirement last month. He has a 1-2 record and a 5.09 ERA.
