105-foot-long slide opens at Swansfield pool

The Columbia Association has announced the opening of the tallest and longest water slide in Howard County, an 18-foot-high, 105-foot-long slide at the Swansfield neighborhood pool.

In addition to the slide, large shade umbrellas, new lounge furniture and new landscaping have been added. The pool is at 5659 Cedar Lane in Harper's Choice village.

`Choose Civility' project sponsored

The Howard County Library and its community partners are sponsoring a long-term initiative, "Choose Civility," to make Howard County a national model of respect, consideration, empathy and tolerance. The project is supported in part by a grant from The Horizon Foundation.

As part of the initiative, the library will hold discussions of novels that raise moral questions. Billy Budd by Herman Melville will be discussed at 7:30 p.m. July 10 at Vantage House, a co-sponsor of the program.

Lord of the Flies by William Golding will be discussed at 7:30 p.m. July 24.

Wilde Lake to hold family pool party

The Wilde Lake Community Association will sponsor a family pool party from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. July 19 at Running Brook pool. The event is for Wilde Lake residents only.

Children to age 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Pool membership is not required. The cost is $3 a person and includes swimming, pizza and a beverage. Tickets must be purchased in advance. Information: 410-730-3987.

Jazz and tap dance classes offered

Judy Templeton will offer Musical Theatre Dance Skills and a chance to participate in a show in a six-week series of classes that begin at 5 p.m. July 3 at Slayton House on Wilde Lake Village Green. Jazz and tap techniques will be taught. The cost is $90.

Playgroups -- Town Center Community Association is accepting registration for its summer session of Parents and Tots Play Groups, to begin July 10, 11 and 12. Children ages 24 months to 4 years of age will meet Tuesdays; ages 6 months to 2 years of age will meet Wednesdays; ages 6 months to 4 years of age will meet Thursdays. The sessions are held from 10 a.m. to noon and run for eight weeks, ending the week of Aug. 28. Activities include coloring and playing with toys and, together, listening to music and reading. The groups meet at Historic Oakland, 5430 Vantage Point Road. The cost is $20 a child for Columbia residents; $22 for nonresidents. Siblings can enroll for half price. 410-730-4744.

Atholton reunion -- Atholton High School's Class of 1977 will hold its 30th Year Reunion from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday at the Manor House at Historic Savage Mill in Savage. Senior yoga -- The Yoga Center of Columbia is offering senior yoga classes at Slayton House on Wilde Lake Village Green. The classes, held from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursdays, are adapted to individual needs. They are slower-paced, and emphasize breathing and stress reduction. The cost is $52 for a four-week session; $15 a class for drop-ins. Columbia lien payers can request a 10 percent discount. Classes are appropriate for all levels of experience, but participants are encouraged to consult a physician before starting any exercise program.
