Hearing to focus on needs of elderly

The Anne Arundel County Department of Aging and Disabilities will hold a public hearing today to solicit input about services for older adults and unmet needs of seniors and their families.

The hearing will be held at1 p.m. at the Pascal Senior Center, 125 Dorsey Road, Glen Burnie.

Public hearings are required every four years under the Older Americans Act.

Wayne M. Taylor, department director, also is requesting written suggestions from seniors and other members of the public on how to improve and expand services.

AACC registration at senior centers

Anne Arundel Community College is holding summer registration at all county senior centers.

The Annapolis, Pasadena, Pascal and O'Malley senior centers will also offer the pilot STARS program. Students who have previously taken a class through the college, and who can pay using a major credit card, can register using a touch-tone phone.

Students will also be able to register for classes at the center.

A list of classes is posted online and at the centers.

Classes will begin the week of July 9.

Medicare help available for seniors

Senior Medicare clients with limited incomes might qualify for extra help in paying the cost of Medicare Part D prescription drug plan premiums, deductibles and co-payments.

Education and enrollment appointments will be available on Monday at the Brooklyn Park Senior Center, 202 Hammonds Lane, 410-222-6847.

Volunteers sought for senior aid

The county Department of Aging and Disabilities is seeking volunteers age 55 and older to aid seniors in the community and other residents.

Programs include tax assistance, nutrition sites, tutors and mentors in schools, as well as administrative support for state and county police.
