Relay for Life is scheduled for June 22 in Cooksville

The first Western Howard County Relay for Life will be held June 22 at Glenwood Community and Senior Center, 2400 Route 97, Cooksville.

A Cancer Survivors' Dinner, free to survivors and a guest, will be served at 5 p.m. Registration (410-781-4316, or online at www.acsevents.org/relay/westernhoward) is required.

Opening ceremonies are to be held at 6:30 p.m., and a Survivors' Lap, the official beginning of the all-night walk to raise money for the American Cancer Society, is slated for 6:50 p.m.

A concert at Western Regional Park by singer and saxophonist Deanna Bogart, sponsored by Howard County Department of Recreation and Parks, is scheduled from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. About 500 people are expected to be at Western Regional Park, directly behind the community center, for the relay and concert.

Cross-country camp -- The Howard County Department of Recreation and Parks is accepting registration for its Cross Country Camp, to be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 6-10 at River Hill High School in Clarksville. River Hill varsity cross-country coach Earl E. Lauer will lead the camp, which is in its seventh year. The focus will be on video analysis of running technique, training basics, diet and nutrition, care and prevention of injuries and equipment selection. The cost is $130. 410-313-7275.

Help sought -- Humane Society of Washington County asks residents of Washington, Frederick and Howard counties to help with a rehabilitation effort for more than 70 horses impounded by the society last year because of neglect. Alfalfa is needed for horses that are being rehabilitated at Days End Farm Horse Rescue in Lisbon. 301-733- 2060, Ext. 237.

Musicians sought -- Glenwood Community Center is developing a list of those who would like to play a variety of music with other musicians. The sessions are to be open to anyone who has a musical instrument. If there is sufficient interest, music jam sessions are to start in the fall. To be placed on the list: 410-313-4840. Sports camps -- The River Hill Boosters will sponsor summer sports camps to help young athletes improve basic skills. The camps will be held at River Hill High School. Country line dancing -- Howard County Department of Recreation and Parks is sponsoring a beginner country line dancing class for those ages 55 and older from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesdays, through June 26, at Glenwood Community and Senior Center, 2400 Route 97, Cooksville. Little or no dance experience is required. Students can learn the basic steps of country line dancing. Wear or take leather-soled shoes; sneakers are not recommended. The cost is $27.
