Two Atholton High seniors, Tom and Taylor, honored

Atholton High School has announced that two of its seniors have been awarded Best Buy Children's Foundation Awards.

Lisa Tom, who plans to attend Princeton University in the fall, was recognized for community service. Alex Taylor, who is to attend Washington University in St. Louis, was recognized for academics and community service.

Around town

Playgroups -- Town Center Community Association is accepting registration for its summer session of Parents and Tots Play Groups, to begin July 10, 11 and 12. Children ages 24 months to 4 years old will meet Tuesdays; ages 6 months to 2 years old will meet Wednesdays; ages 6 months to 4 years old will meet Thursdays. The sessions are held from 10 a.m. to noon and run for eight weeks, ending the week of Aug. 28. Activities include coloring and playing with toys and, together, listening to music and reading. The groups meet at Historic Oakland, 5430 Vantage Point Road. The cost is $20 a child for Columbia residents; $22 for non-residents. Siblings can enroll for half price. 40th birthday -- Slayton House is celebrating its 40th birthday with a "Fabulous 40 Birthday Celebration," sponsored by Wilde Lake Community Association. The event, scheduled for this weekend, includes a tour of 11 Wilde Lake older homes and a hook-less fishing event on the lake for children from noon to 3 p.m. today. Tickets for the tour are $25; they will be available at 11:30 a.m. at the boathouse at Wilde Lake Park on Hyla Brook Road. Laughter workout -- Howard County Department of Recreation and Parks is sponsoring "Another Way to See It," a laughter club for those ages 55 and older. The program includes laughter exercises. The club meets from 9 a.m. to 9:40 a.m. Mondays at the Bain Center, 5470 Ruth Keeton Way. 410-313- 7279.

Stress reduction -- The central library, 10375 Little Patuxent Parkway, is presenting the last session in a three-part program, "The New You," with Marilyn Thorpe, life coach with NexPhase Transitions. Mah-jongg -- Those ages 18 or older are invited to Slayton House in Wilde Lake Village Center for mah-jongg at 10 a.m. Wednesdays. Admission is free. Participants are invited to take a game and attend with a friend. Wilde Lake Community Association is sponsoring the program. 410-730-3987.

Senior yoga -- The Yoga Center of Columbia is offering senior yoga classes at Slayton House on Wilde Lake Village Green. The classes, held from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursdays, are adapted to individual needs. They are slower-paced, and emphasize breathing and stress reduction. A current session ends this week. The cost is $52 for a four-week session; $15 a class for drop-ins. 410-730-3987.
