Friends of Latin America to welcome Cuba Caravan

Howard County Friends of Latin America and others will welcome the Pastors for Peace Cuba Caravan with a potluck dinner and program from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. July 6 at the Meeting House, 5885 Robert Oliver Place, in Oakland Mills Village Center.

Entertainment will be provided. Those who attend are asked to provide a main dish to share. Admission is free.

Around Town

At the library -- A reading program for children, "Reading Roadtrip," offers prizes for books children read during summer. Participants can register at the east Columbia branch, 6600 Cradlerock Way. A program is also available for babies and toddlers to age 3, in which parents can read books, magazines or newspapers to their children and earn prizes.

An adult summer reading club, sponsored by Friends of the Howard County Library, is offered through Aug. 31. Participants will be eligible for monthly prize drawings. Entry forms are available at the information desk in each library. www.hclibrary.org.

Bridge, tai chi -- The east Columbia 50+ Center at the east Columbia library, 6600 Cradlerock Way, is offering a free Bridge Night for advanced players from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Wednesdays.

"Simplified Yang's Tai Chi," 24 gentle moves taught by Ping Mao, will be offered from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. once or twice a week. The cost is $6 a class. A series of classes is to begin on a date to be determined.

A "Harmonize Your Body" exercise class featuring the 4-S method (Stamina-Strength-Stretch-Synergy) will be held from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, starting this week. The cost is $3 a class. 410-313-7680.

Benefit walk -- Columbia Association Middle School Advisory Committee will sponsor a Cancer Walk from noon to 2 p.m. June 24 on the two-mile path around Lake Elkhorn. Proceeds from the walk, which costs $20, will benefit the American Cancer Society. Registration can be completed in advance or at 11 a.m. on the day of the walk. 410-715-5523.

Baby-sitting -- Columbia Teen Center, 5853 Robert Oliver Place, will offer its one-day "Baby-sitting Made Easy" workshop from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 30 and July 21. The program, for those ages 11 to 14, includes first aid, emergency procedures, safety precautions and other baby-sitting skills. The cost is $48 for Columbia residents; $58 for nonresidents. There is a nonrefundable registration fee of $10. 410-992-3726.

Football camp -- Howard County Football Technique Camp for youngsters in grades three to nine will be held from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. July 9-13 at Hammond High School in Columbia. Tuition is $160. A $10 discount is offered to members of youth football leagues. 301-776- 8962.
