Gushing about Guthrie

ROCH AROUND THE CLOCK

The Kickoff

June 11, 2007|By ROCH KUBATKO

Orioles pitching coach Leo Mazzone was raving about Jeremy Guthrie yesterday, and his comments were unsolicited. He just felt like talking about Guthrie, who deserves all the praise that's coming his way.

Guthrie is throwing all his pitches for strikes, but Mazzone said the key is how the right-hander is commanding his fastball. He's putting it wherever he wants, and that sets up the rest of his pitches.

Sure doesn't hurt that the fastball is coming in at 97 mph.

Guthrie has to be the most prepared pitcher on the staff - unless it's Steve Trachsel. Guthrie has been paying close attention to the veteran right-hander, studying how he gets ready and how he watches a game when he's not pitching.

I like a young pitcher who doesn't think he knows everything.

The first 10,000 fans 15-and-over attending tomorrow's Orioles game against the Washington Nationals will receive a Chris Ray T-shirt.

I'm going to wear mine for eight innings and give it up in the ninth.
