Journeys' final spring service set

Journeys Community, a nontraditional spiritual-seekers group, will hold its final spring service at 10 a.m. Sunday in the second-floor auditorium of Vantage House Life-Care Retirement Community, 5400 Vantage Point Road in Town Center, Columbia.

This week's service will celebrate the nature and power of community.

The kick-off for the group's summer program will be a community picnic, to be held at 5 p.m. July 1. Summer activities, many of them outdoors, are to be held through Labor Day; regular services will continue Sept. 9.

Journeys Community has published a book, Seeking the Spirit: How to Create a Community of Seekers, describing the history of the Columbia group and its nontraditional liturgy.

Matzohball 5K to be run Sunday

The third Matzohball 5K and 1 Mile Fun Run/Walk, a community and family event to benefit Temple Isaiah in Fulton, will be held Sunday in the south area of Centennial Park in Ellicott City.

The 5K race is to begin at 9 a.m.; the 1 Mile Fun Run/Walk is scheduled to start gins at 9:10 a.m. First-, second- and third-place awards will be given to male and female participants.

The cost is $18 in advance; $25 for a family. Admission on the day of the race is $22; $30 for a family. Participants are also asked to take a bag of canned food to be donated to Elizabeth House in Laurel.

The event is part of a free family Health and Wellness Day, also sponsored by Temple Isaiah, to be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in pavilions A, B and C at the park. The event, which is open to everyone, includes information booths staffed by government agencies and health organizations, presentations, exhibits, demonstrations and visits by Bubbles the Clown and members of the Baltimore Blast.

Shrine to celebrate St. Anthony feast day

The Shrine of St. Anthony, 12290 Folly Quarter Road, Ellicott City, will celebrate the feast day of St. Anthony with several days of activities. A saint's feast day celebrates his or her entrance into heaven.

A Dinner and Concert Under the Arches, featuring a local musical family, the Hernandez Family Singers, is planned from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $25 in advance; $15 for children. Tickets purchased at the gate are $30 for adults; $15 for children.

An Evening Prayer in Honor of St. Anthony is planned for 5 p.m. Tuesday, and a feast day Mass and blessing of St. Anthony bread (symbolic of charity given for the needs of the poor) will be held at noon Wednesday, the saint's feast day. A Eucharist and blessing will be held at 7:30 p.m. A reception in the Papal Dining Room is planned.

A Healing Mass and praying over the sick will be held at 3 p.m. June 17.

Secondhand smoke hazards to be focus

The Women of Worship Ministry of Bridgeway Community Church, in collaboration with Millennium Community Outreach Institute, a national consulting group focused on the concerns of minorities, will sponsor Not in Mama's Kitchen, a presentation on the hazards of secondhand smoke and the influence that mothers can have in creating a smoke-free environment in homes and places of worship.

Brenda Bell Caffee, founder of the Not in Mama's Kitchen campaign, will speak. The event, which includes a free lunch, will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. tomorrow at the church, 9189 Red Branch Road, Columbia.

Christian aerobics at two churches

Body & Soul Christian Aerobics is offering eight-week sessions of cardio and strength training set to contemporary Christian music.

A class is offered at 9:15 a.m. Tuesdays and Fridays at First Presbyterian Church in Columbia.
