A passion for music and for each other

Once will certainly not be enough for Once, a musical love story that simultaneously defies, reimagines and celebrates the boundaries of both genres. There's not a false moment within the film's 88-minute running time, nor many that could be done any better.

Writer-director John Carney, who has worked primarily on Irish TV, gives a cinema verite look and feel to this tale of two subsistence-level Dublin, Ireland, street musicians who meet as thousands of people do every day, strike up an acquaintance like thousands of people do every day, and wrestle with the issue of taking their relationship to the next level, like thousands of people do every day. There are no big moments in Once, just a series of honest, heartfelt ones delivered with compassion, insight and good humor.

Once (Fox Searchlight Pictures) Starring Glen Hansard, Marketa Irglova. Written and directed by John Carney. Rated R. Time 88 minutes.
