Bank is named an award finalist

Howard Bank, a locally owned and managed institution, has been named a finalist in the six-to-50-employee category of the Maryland Chamber of Commerce's Small Business of the Year Awards Program.

Nominees were judged on performance, growth, innovation, creativity, competitiveness, community involvement and other criteria.

The bank has branches in Hickory Ridge village, on Snowden River Parkway and on Johns Hopkins Road in Maple Lawn.

A branch is planned for Ellicott City, at U.S. 40, Centennial Lane and Frederick Road.

Seminar slated for entrepreneurs

The Maryland Small Business Development Center and the Howard County Economic Development Authority's Business Resource Center will sponsor "Smart Start to Business Success," a seminar for first-time entrepreneurs.

Topics include selecting an appropriate legal business entity, financial records, getting start-up money, insurance options and business resources available in Howard County.

The seminar will be held from 8:30 a.m. to noon June 13 at the Center for Business and Technology Development, 9250 Bendix Road North, Columbia. The cost is $39. Registration is required.

SHA wins Rouse diversity award

The State Highway Administration was one of two organizations to receive the Chesapeake Human Resources Association's 2007 James W. Rouse Excellence in Diversity Award last month.

The award is presented annually to CHRA member organizations, in recognition of innovative strategies they have used to advance diversity.

SHA, which received the award for the second time, was recognized for its support of diversity in recruitment, education and training, its sponsorship of student internships and mentoring programs, and its annual employee diversity conference.
