Yoga classes for seniors at Slayton House

The Yoga Center of Columbia is offering senior yoga classes at Slayton House on Wilde Lake Village Green.

The classes, held from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursdays, are adapted to individual needs; they are slower-paced, and emphasize breathing and stress reduction. A current session runs through June 21.

The cost is $52 for a four-week session; $15 a class for drop-ins. Columbia lien payers can request a 10 percent discount.

Classes are appropriate for all levels of experience, but participants are encouraged to consult a physician before starting any exercise program.

The program is sponsored by Wilde Lake Community Association.

Around town

Bocce courts -- New bocce courts have been opened at Cedar Lane Park. They were built to be used by Special Olympics Howard County for training and competition, but will also be open to the public. Life Scout Andy Byun, 15, of Mount Airy built the courts for his Eagle Scout project, with support from the Howard County Department of Recreation and Parks. He is a student at Glenelg High School. The game of bocce, which is similar to lawn bowling, originated in Italy. A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held May 7 at the park.

Laughter workout -- Howard County Department of Recreation and Parks is sponsoring "Another Way to See It," a laughter club for those ages 55 and older. The program includes laughter exercises. The club meets from 9 a.m. to 9:40 a.m. Mondays at the Bain Center, 5470 Ruth Keeton Way. 410-313- 7279.

Mah-jongg -- Those ages 18 or older are invited to Slayton House in Wilde Lake Village Center for mah-jongg at 10 a.m. Wednesdays. Admission is free. Participants are invited to take a game and attend with a friend. Wilde Lake Community Association is sponsoring the program. 410-730-3987.

Retirement seminar -- A daylong seminar for those approaching retirement or who have recently retired, "Choosing Tomorrow Now," is planned from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 14 at the Bain Center, 5470 Ruth Keeton Way. Workshops are to include "Transitioning to the Purposeful Life," "Learning, Changing, Becoming" and "Travel for Pleasure ... and Purpose." 40th birthday -- Slayton House will celebrate its 40th birthday with a "Fabulous 40 Birthday Celebration," sponsored by Wilde Lake Community Association. The event, scheduled for June 16-17, will include entertainment, food, games, a tour of historic homes and a dedication. Tickets for the tour are $20 in advance; $25 on the day of the event. Three hundred tickets will be sold. Any tickets left unsold will be offered to the public at 11:30 a.m. on the day of the event at the boathouse at Wilde Lake Park on Hyla Brook Road. Stress reduction -- The central library, 10375 Little Patuxent Parkway, is presenting the last session in a three-part program, "The New You," with Marilyn Thorpe, life coach with NexPhase Transitions. The session on how to avoid procrastination is scheduled for June 19. Registration is required. 410-313-7860.

Atholton reunion -- Atholton High School's Class of 1977 will hold its 30th Year Reunion from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. June 30 at the Manor House at Historic Savage Mill in Savage. The cost is $40 in advance; $45 at the door. Reservations are requested.
