Board of Education to meet June 14

The Howard County Board of Education will hold a regularly scheduled meeting at 4 p.m. June 14 in the boardroom at the Department of Education, 10910 Route 108, Ellicott City.

The afternoon session and an evening session, which begins at 7:30 p.m., will start with a public forum during which members of the public can address the board on any topic for which there is no formal hearing process. Sign-up in advance is preferred.

A feasibility study, which looks at future capital needs and improvements and attendance-area adjustments, when necessary, will be presented during the evening session. The board will hold public hearings on Policy 4111 (school health services) and Policy 3131 (publications/communications).

Summer school registration is open

The summer school program for Howard County high schools offers a variety of courses to allow students to earn credit toward graduation or for academic enrichment.

Registration is accepted in person only at the Homewood Center, 10914 Route 108, Ellicott City from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday, and June 13 and 20, and from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday and June 16 and 23.

Tuition is $475 for credit courses; $275 for review credit courses. Some courses, including ESOL English courses and Algebra I, are free.

Registration forms are available in high school counseling offices and must include a counselor's signature.

College planning workshop for singers

Howard Community College's Musical Arts Center will sponsor the "Little Patuxent Opera Institute: A Performance Workshop for Singers," ages 16 and older, from June 11 through July 29.

The center will also offer musical summer camps for beginners ages 5 to 10, intermediate and advanced students in strings and orchestra, rock, jazz and brass. A Gemini Piano Trio Workshop for ages 11 to 18 and piano camps for ages 7 to 18 will also be offered.
