Scores of the straight-sets victory by the Atholton mixed doubles team of John Healey and Julia Southerland against Eleanor Roosevelt's Masha Sitnova and Subodh Arora in the state championship at the University of Maryland on Saturday. The Atholton pair swept the county, regional and state tournaments, and they were the only metro-area players to reach the state finals over the weekend.


Fourth-quarter saves made by Glenelg junior goalie Jon Selfridge in the Class 3A-2A boys lacrosse state title game last Wednesday, as the Gladiators defeated Fallston, 6-3, to bring home the program's first championship. Selfridge finished the game with 15 saves against a Cougars' attack that averaged 10.7 goals per game this season. Glenelg had been to the championship game four other times - in 1983, 1997, 2000 and 2004 - before breaking through to win this year's crown.


Strikeouts recorded by Hammond sophomore Stephanie Speierman in the perfect game she threw in Saturday's Class 2A state championship, a 4-0 win over North East-Cecil. Speierman struck out the first 11 batters and the final six to become the fourth pitcher in state history to throw a perfect game in a final. .


Points scored by the Howard boys track team to repeat as Class 2A state champions. Joey Thompson set a 2A record in the 3,200 with a time of 9 minutes, 19.90 seconds Thursday, and the Lions' 400-meter relay team - Matt Harvey, Marcus Randolph, Chris Brewington and Anthony Elliott - also set a new 2A standard with a time of 42.18.


Strikeouts by Speierman this season - a new state mark - in leading the Bears to a 23-1 mark. Speierman smashed the old mark of 353, set by Calvert's Megan Elliott in 2003.
