Man arrested in woman's death

May 29, 2007

A blood-splattered Middle River man was arrested yesterday after he told a Baltimore County police officer that he had killed his girlfriend then tried to commit suicide, according to a police spokesman.

The man had not been charged last night, and his name was withheld pending an appearance before a court commissioner. Police also withheld the name of the victim. Police were able to provide only sketchy information about the incident as the investigation continued.

Cpl. George Erhardt, a Baltimore County Police Department spokesman, gave this account of the incident:

At 9:33 yesterday morning, the man, his arms and shirt bloody, approached an officer who had stopped outside a shopping center at 2109 Eastern Blvd. He told the officer that he thought he had killed his girlfriend. Police arrived at the home in the 100 block of Riverthorn Road about eight minutes later and found the body of a woman in the basement. She appeared to have been strangled.

Police said the suspect was bloody because he had slashed his wrists. The motive for the killing was not known, police said.
