Memorial Day closings announced

Carroll County Government offices will be closed tomorrow for Memorial Day.

Carroll County public libraries, senior centers and public schools will be closed tomorrow.

Northern Landfill and the Recycling Center also will be closed tomorrow.

Motorists reminded to buckle up

Carroll County Sheriff's Deputies will be out in extra force during the Memorial Day weekend to protect motorists from impaired, aggressive and unsafe drivers.

The Sheriff's Office is alerting motorists that in addition to the "Click It or Ticket" seat belt enforcement initiative, a saturation patrol will be in place throughout the weekend to identify and remove impaired drivers from the road.

Memorial Day weekend also signals the start of vacation season, and county commissioners appeal to drivers to obey all traffic laws.

Trash pick-up schedule changed

The Westminster Department of Public Works Street Maintenance Department has changed its regular pick-up schedule for the Memorial Day holiday.

Brush and metal for the entire city will be picked up Tuesday. Only calls for pick-up will be scheduled.

Seat belt campaign is in effect

The Westminster City Police Department is participating in the national seat belt safety awareness campaign, "Click It or Ticket," through June 3.

Officers will strongly enforce the safety belt laws in an effort to reduce road fatalities.

Church is collecting used bicycles

A "Bikes for the World" used bicycle collection will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at St. Joseph Catholic Community Church, 915 Liberty Road, Eldersburg.

The bicycles are re-conditioned and sent to countries in Asia, South America and Central America, where they are used for transportation to work and school, as a bicycle taxi service and recreation.

A $10 donation per bike is suggested to help defray the cost of shipping to overseas charities that will distribute the bikes. The organization also accepts sewing machines, bicycle spare parts, books and tools.

Receipts will be provided for all material and cash donations; checks are accepted.
