Poster contest awards are Tuesday

The Carroll County Youth Intervention Officer Program and Carroll County public schools will hold their third annual "Safety Is Only a Click Away -- Buckle Up" fourth grade Poster Contest Awards Night at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Winters Mill High School on Gorsuch Road.

Law enforcement officers from the Carroll County Sheriff's Office, Maryland State Police and Westminster Police Department work together with the schools to provide safety and substance abuse prevention programs to students.

Awards will be presented to the top three winners from each school and to the All-County winner, whose poster will be printed on a billboard.

Alternative to GED offered in county

Carroll County public schools offer the External Diploma Program, a self-paced alternative to the GED test.

An information session on the program will be held at 9 a.m. Wednesday at Carroll Adult Learning Connection, 224 N. Center St., Westminster.

Teens to learn about teamwork

Westminster High School peer facilitators will take a trip to Outward Bound for teamwork training Wednesday.

Peer facilitators are students who are available in each high school to advise, facilitate, mediate student conflicts, and serve as advocates for other students.

Students must meet school administration standards of acceptability and complete a training program. The Baltimore Chesapeake Bay Outward Bound Center is a non-profit organization with five core programs that change lives, build teams and transform schools.

The public schools have partnered with Outward Bound. The Gateway School has sent students to the program and plans are in the works to send members of Student Government.

Taneytown group's banquet is June 23

The Taneytown High School Alumni Association will hold its annual banquet at 6 p.m. June 23 at the Pleasant Valley Fire Hall.

The cost is $16 with payment due by June 7. Checks should be made payable to the THS Alumni Association, with name and year of graduation, and sent to Charlotte Bollinger at 308 Taney Heights Drive, Taneytown, Md. 21787.
