Church administrator

May 25, 2007

Gloria Anne Wiedorfer, a retired administrator of a downtown Roman Catholic church, died of heart disease May 18 at Howard County General Hospital. The Columbia resident was 78.

Born Gloria Anne Marousek in Baltimore and raised on East Madison Street, she was a 1946 graduate of the Institute of Notre Dame and was a nursing aide in her East Baltimore neighborhood.

She attended the St. Agnes Hospital School of Nursing and the Johns Hopkins University but discontinued her studies because of poor health.

In 1953, she began teaching for the Archdiocese of Baltimore at St. Anthony of Padua Parochial School in Gardenville and the old St. Andrew's School near Johns Hopkins Hospital.

After raising a family, she became a bookkeeper at St. Anthony's Church and school from 1978 to 1982. She was then parish administrator at St. Vincent de Paul Church on Front Street, where a Mass of Christian burial was offered Wednesday. She held the post there for 22 years and was awarded the church's memorial medal.

Family members said Mrs. Wiedorfer never gave up her ambition to be a nurse. She earned an associate of arts degree in nursing from Essex Community College in 1992, at the age of 60, but could not practice the profession because of the effects of an auto accident injury.

Mrs. Wiedorfer was active in Girl Scouts of Central Maryland for 14 years. She played bingo several times a week and was a duckpin bowler. She also enjoyed polka dancing.

Survivors include a son, Joseph Wiedorfer Jr. of Washington; three daughters, M. Carole Wiedorfer and Donna Wiedorfer, both of Columbia, and Robin Harmon of Millsboro, Del.; a brother, Lawrence Marousek of Alexandria, Va.; a sister, Shirley Broring of Kensington; and six grandchildren. Her husband of 40 years, Joseph Wiedorfer Sr., an accountant, died in 1998.
