Motorcyclist dies on JFX

May 21, 2007

A male motorcyclist was killed and another escaped injury last night when they lost control of their bikes in related accidents on the Jones Falls Expressway north of Guilford Avenue, a city Fire Department spokesman said.

The victim, whose name was withheld pending notification of family members, was pronounced dead at the scene. His body was taken to the state medical examiner's office, where an autopsy was to be performed today, authorities said.

The first motorcyclist was riding north when his bike hit a jersey wall on the right side of the expressway, said Chief Kevin Cartwright, a Fire Department spokesman. The impact threw him over the barrier, while the bike continued about 125 feet and caught fire, he said.

Two fellow motorcyclists who had been trailing came upon traffic that had stopped at the crash scene. One of them lost control but escaped injury by jumping off his bike before it hit another spot on the same jersey wall and came to rest near the first motorcycle, Cartwright said.

The accidents remained under investigation by police.
