3 shot outside center in Frederick County

Three young men suffered gunshot wounds, apparently after an altercation involving a large group outside a Frederick County community center late Saturday, authorities said yesterday.

Names and conditions of the victims and details of the shooting remained sketchy. Cpl. Jennifer Bailey, a spokeswoman for the Frederick County Sheriff's Office, said one victim was flown to Maryland Shock Trauma Center with a head wound, and the other two went to Frederick Memorial Hospital.

Bailey said that Deputy 1st Class Jose Rivera was on routine patrol about 11:40 p.m. when he saw a crowd outside the Discovery Community Center in Walkersville.

"He came upon about 200 people and got out to investigate," Bailey said. "The crowd started to disperse and he found a male victim lying on the ground with what appeared to be a gunshot wound to the head."

About 15 minutes later, the sheriff's office got a call from Frederick Memorial Hospital after two male victims arrived there with gunshot wounds, Bailey said.

She said investigators are still conducting interviews, trying to piece together what happened. She said she had no information on whether the shootings might have been gang-related. "At this point we are not speculating on gang activity."

Bailey said a park near the community center is a popular hangout for neighborhood young people.

The triple shooting came as something of a jolt to a community where violent crime is uncommon.

"It was surprising," Bailey said. "We pride ourselves on being a community where this kind of thing is rare."
