CCC graduation is Wednesday

Carroll Community College will hold commencement exercises at 3 p.m. Wednesday at McDaniel College in Westminster.

About 400 students have applied to graduate with degrees or certificates. Graduates of the Class of 2007 include students who completed degrees in August and December 2006 and May 2007.

School board to meet Wednesday

The Carroll County Board of Education will hold an administrative meeting at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Room 007 of the board offices at 125 N. Court St., Westminster.

A work session with the Teacher of the Year finalists will be held afterward.

Sandymount marks Memorial Day

Sandymount Elementary School will hold its annual Memorial Day program at 9:30 a.m. Friday in the auditorium at 2222 Old Westminster Pike.

Students will honor veterans with a musical tribute. Any veteran or current military personnel is invited to attend. A light breakfast will be served in the media center at 8:30 a.m.

CCC offers fast-track for teachers

Carroll Community College's education program is offering a fast-track program for secondary education conditional teachers and career changers starting next month.

Students who complete the required coursework and a year of successful teaching in a Maryland State Department Education accredited school system, and pass appropriate Praxis exams, can apply for state certification.

Students must have at least a bachelor's degree.

Conditional teachers wishing to complete elementary or early childhood certification can set up an individual fast-track program.

Courses are: Summer I 2007, Educational Psychology and Reading in the Content Area/Part I; Summer II 2007, Secondary Methods and Human Development across the Lifespan; Fall 2007, Assessment in Education or Introduction to Special Education, and Field Experience & Mentoring or Reading in the Content Area/Part II; Spring 2008, Assessment in Education or Introduction to Special Education, and Field Experience & Mentoring or Reading in the Content Area/Part II.

Teen camp focuses on forensic science

McDaniel College will hold its Forensic Science Camp for teens this summer.

Campers will investigate crime scenes, analyze blood and hair samples, peer into DNA, and study ballistics and fingerprinting in classrooms, laboratories and on field trips.

Sessions will be held June 17-22 and July 1-6. Campers may stay on campus or commute. The cost is $675 for resident campers, including five nights lodging and meals; and $425 for commuters, including lunch daily.

Forensic Science Camp is open to high school students or graduates who have completed at least Chemistry I and Biology I courses. Students who successfully complete the college-level material will receive one semester hour of academic college credit.

Deadline for registration, with payment, is June 1. A brochure with registration is at www.mcdaniel.edu/campforensics.
