Carnivals to kick off Memorial Day weekend

May 20, 2007

The Memorial Day weekend starts early in Carroll County now that the Gamber & Community Fire Company carnival runs eight days, starting Saturday, and continuing through June 2.

Last year, Gamber opened the Saturday before Memorial Day and was the first carnival to be held on a Sunday. The extra two days were so successful that the fire company is doing it again, said Jeannie Green of the carnival committee.

The only restriction for holding the carnival on Sunday is that no gambling is allowed, Gamber officials said. The fire company canceled its nightly bingo this year because it wasn't cost effective, Green said.

The annual carnival is the fire company's biggest fundraiser of the year, helping to pay for new equipment, supplies and repairs not covered by county funding.

The Gamber carnival will open at 6 p.m. daily on the firehouse grounds on Route 32 at Niner Road. Food, games, raffles, 25 rides and entertainment will be held in the evening.

A holiday fireworks display will be held May 28. In event of rain, the fireworks will be held Tuesday.

The concert lineup features Iron Ridge on Saturday, Poison Whiskey on May 27, Big Cam and the Lifters on May 28, CB Pickers on May 29, the Shades on May 30, Stick Time on May 31, Carroll County Ramblers on June 1 and Roll the Dice on June 2.

On Gamber's heels, Union Bridge Volunteer Fire Department opens its carnival May 28 with a Memorial Day service at 6 p.m. at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8806 across from the carnival grounds at 8 W. Locust St.

This carnival features the first of several parades held by the fire companies, starting at 7 p.m. May 30.

Union Bridge also offers lunches from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, as well as dinner platters from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. daily during carnival week.

The concert schedule offers Iron Ridge on May 28, Tall in the Saddle on May 29, Bob Plunkert & Real Country on May 31, No Alibi on June 1 and No Xit Band on June 2.
