Nationals update

After a horrible start, the Nationals are red-hot, having won six of their past seven games. They're still in last place in the National League East, but not looking nearly as bad as they did in April. But here's the problem: Their rotation is in tatters. Two more starters went down, and both of them were supposed to pitch in this series. Jason Bergmann (1-3, 2.76 ERA), who took a no-hit bid into the eighth inning Monday, was scratched from tomorrow's start because of tightness in his right elbow. A magnetic resonance imaging test was negative. And Bowie replaces Jerome Williams, who returned to the disabled list with a strained rotator cuff. Washington is 10-11 at home, compared with 5-15 on the road. Second baseman Felipe Lopez was in a 14-for-85 slump before coming within a home run of hitting for the cycle yesterday. The Nationals and Orioles split six games last season, with Washington winning two of three at RFK Stadium.
