Melinda Doolittle

American Idol Watch Last night's castoff

Fatal Songs:

"I Believe in You and Me," "Nutbush City Limits" and "I'm a Woman"

What Went Wrong:

Whoa! Didn't see that one coming. The judges lavished her with praise and compared her to Gladys Knight, Tina Turner, even Celia Cruz. Maybe that was the problem. The show is supposed to find the next big thing. In Doolittle, we found a consummate pro, not an up-and-coming artist.

Shining Moment:

Pretty much every time she showed up on camera. There is a fine line between good Idol performances and pat karaoke. She never crossed it.

Our Pick for the Idol Crown:

Armed with power ballads, Jordin Sparks should wipe the floor of the Kodak Theatre with Blake Lewis. He should really start practicing his hugging technique.
