`Services for Seniors' booklet available

The 2007-2008 "Services for Seniors" booklet is now available. A resource directory for services for seniors and the disabled in Anne Arundel County, it is available at businesses, senior centers, government buildings and Anne Arundel Community College.

Call Back keeps residents informed

Operation Call Back is an automatic telephone information program that notifies participants by phone if there is crime against the elderly in their neighborhood.

To join, fill out and mail an Operation Call Back postcard, available at county senior centers, or call 410-222-0045.

Volunteers sought for senior aid

The county Department of Aging and Disabilities is seeking volunteers age 55 and older to aid seniors in the community and other residents.

Programs include tax assistance, nutrition sites, tutors and mentors in schools, as well as administrative support for state and county police.

Older drivers can have skills assessed

Volunteers at the Maryland Association of Highway Safety Leaders are offering drivers age 60 and older a driving health inventory. The free assessments are meant to help older drivers recognize the loss of key driving skills.

This assessment is available through the Pascal Senior Center, 125 Dorsey Road, Glen Burnie. Appointments are private and confidential.

Jewelry making -- Susan Brown will be at the O'Malley Senior Center from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. today and May 23 for jewelry-making workshops. Students can make necklaces, watches, earrings, pins and bracelets using semiprecious beads, stones and sterling silver. The cost is calculated per project. 410-222-6227 or 301-621-9515.

Concert -- Trish and Frank Curreri will bring vintage entertainment to the Pascal Senior Center, 125 Dorsey Road in Glen Burnie, at 12:30 p.m. tomorrow with a performance of popular songs from the 1940s, '50s and '60s. 410-222-6680.

Preakness show -- The Pascal Senior Center, 125 Dorsey Road in Glen Burnie, will sponsor a presentation of Win-Place-Show: The Musical Story of the Preakness Thirst 'n' Howl at 12:30 p.m. Friday. The show celebrates Maryland's place in horse racing's Triple Crown. 410-222-6680.

Caregiver workshop -- Registered nurse Mary C. Fridley will hold a "Mechanics of Caregiving" workshop from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Friday at the Brooklyn Park Senior Center, 202 Hammonds Lane. Occupational therapists Stephanie Doyle and Heather Spratt will teach body mechanics for safe transfers and other injury-prevention techniques. 410-222-6847.

Body mass -- The Brooklyn Park Senior Activity Center, 202 Hammonds Lane, will offer body mass index screenings from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Friday. Body mass index is a statistical measure of the weight of a person scaled according to height. Exercise and strength-training tips also will be presented. 410-222-6847.

Caregivers conference -- The 14th annual Caregiver's Conference will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the Annapolis Senior Center, 119 S. Villa Ave. The Anne Arundel County Department of Aging and Disabilities has teamed with organizations and facilities to provide a day filled with information about caregiving methods and resources for those who are caring for family members, friends, or residents in a facility. The conference includes a continental breakfast, lunch, exhibits and free respite care. The cost is $10. 410-573-9100.

Partners in Care -- Partners in Care, a group that helps elderly and disabled adults maintain an independent lifestyle, will hold volunteer orientation sessions at 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. Tuesday at 348 Ritchie Highway, Severna Park. Registration. 410-544-4800, ext. 25.

Craft, bake and plant sale -- The O'Malley Senior Center, 1275 Odenton Road, will host its annual craft, bake and plant sale from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday. It will feature jewelry, purses, quilted items, knitted baby blankets and sweaters, paintings, homemade butter and lotions, plenty of baked items, mixed annual hanging baskets, flowers, bedding plants and vegetable plants. 410-222-6227 or 301-621-9515.

Health fair -- The Arnold Senior Center will offer a mini-health fair from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday at 44 Church Road. Blood pressure, hearing and glucose screenings, and health seminars will be offered. 410-222-1922.

Blood drive -- The American Red Cross will hold a blood drive from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 26 at Our Shepherd Lutheran Church, 400 Benfield Road, Severna Park. Donors must be age 17 or older (16 with written parental consent), must weigh at least 110 pounds and must not have donated blood within the previous 56 days. 410-757-7885.

Choral performance -- The Anne Arundel Retired Teachers Chorus will present their spring show, Americana, at 1 p.m. May 30 at the Arnold Senior Center, 44 Church Road. Reservations. 410-222-1922.

Care packages -- The Annapolis Senior Center, 119 S. Villa Ave., is sponsoring a collection drive for military care packages to support our troops. 410-222-1818.

Canada trip -- The South County Senior Center will sponsor a trip to eastern Canada from Sept. 30 through Oct. 8. The trip will cover Montreal, Quebec City, Kingston and Niagara Falls. Cost is $2,200 for double occupancy and $2,899 for single occupancy. Price includes round-trip airfare. 410-222-1927.
