CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Navy's NCAA tournament first-round game against No. 8 seed North Carolina yesterday was postponed until today at 5 p.m. because of severe thunderstorms.

Heavy rain and lightning swept through the Chapel Hill area beginning between 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. and the downpour remained steady throughout the remainder of the afternoon

The teams were able to take the field for warm-ups shortly after 4 p.m., but a more serious storm swept through the area at 4:30. The teams left the field at that point.

The NCAA games committee and the NCAA director of championships made the decision at 6:45 to postpone the game.

The winner of today's game will play Duke in the quarterfinals next Sunday (at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium) at noon or 3 p.m.
