Seven people were injured, five of them children, in a drive-by shooting in western Prince George's County about 5 p.m. yesterday, authorities said.

Witnesses told police they saw two to four men shoot out of a red or burgundy car as they sped through an apartment complex in the 6800 block of Atwood St. in District Heights.

Seven males, ranging in age from 12 to 21 years old, were shot in the arms and legs. Cpl. Diane Richardson, spokeswoman for the Prince George's County Police Department, said they were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment of injuries that were not considered life-threatening.

Richardson said investigators were following leads that the shooting might have been related to an assault at a nearby McDonald's restaurant earlier yesterday.

"We're still working to find out whether an assault occurred and what the nature of that assault was," Richardson said.

She also said investigators have found nothing to suggest gang involvement.

Police said they found an abandoned car, similar to the one described by witnesses at the shooting, a couple of blocks away from the apartment complex.

Richardson said investigators are not sure whether that car was involved.
