Kiwanis Club awards $14,000 scholarship

The Kiwanis Club of Ellicott City has awarded a $14,000 scholarship to Elizabeth Marie Liem, a senior at Long Reach High School.

The award money, spread over four years, will be placed in Liem's college account at Salisbury University for tuition, books, room and board. Liem, who will be 18 next month, plans to study nursing.

Liem's application was selected from 12 others that were received.

The Kiwanis Club of Ellicott City has awarded scholarships totaling more than $158,000 since 1994.

Norbel School golf outing is May 22

The Norbel School in Elkridge will hold its 14th FORENorbel Golf Outing on May 22 at Renditions Golf Course, Davidsonville.

Registration begins at 12:30 p.m., with a start time of 1:30 p.m. An awards dinner and silent auction are also planned. WJZ meteorologist Marty Bass will be present.

The cost is $150 a player. Proceeds will benefit the school's financial aid fund.

The Norbel School serves capable students with learning or language differences, elementary through high school.

Study skills -- Registration is open for the Stressless Tests Summer Study Skills classes. High school classes will be held from noon to 2 p.m. Aug. 7-10 and repeated Aug. 14-17 at Centennial High School. Three sessions of middle school classes will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. July 31 through Aug. 3, Aug. 7-10 and Aug. 14-17 at Centennial High. Learning English -- The Miller branch library offers an English Conversation Club from 7:45 p.m. to 8:45 p.m. Mondays for people who speak English as a second language and would like to practice conversation in a group setting. First-time participants must register in advance. 410-313-1950.

Knitting for charity -- A community-service knitting and crocheting group meets to knit and crochet blankets, baby clothes and other items for charities, hospitals and senior centers. The group meets from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month at Kiwanis-Wallas Recreation Center. 410-313-7279.

Photo contest -- Ellicott City Restoration Foundation Inc. is holding its third amateur photography contest for pictures in the categories of "vintage," "adult" and "junior," taken in the Ellicott City Historic District. "Vintage" photos must have been taken before 1972. The "adult" category is for photographers ages 18 and older; the "junior" category is for those ages 17 and younger. Winners will be announced June 2 at the Thomas Isaac Log Cabin. Entries can be delivered to the Howard County Tourism Council office, 8267 Main St., Ellicott City by 5 p.m. Friday. The office, at the side entrance of the post office building, is open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday. The photographs will be on display in Ellicott City merchants' windows next month.

Junior firefighters' dance -- The Elkridge Volunteer Fire Department's Junior Firefighters will sponsor a spring fling youth dance, for ages 9 to 15, from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday at the firehouse, 6275 Old Washington Road, Elkridge. Tickets are $8. 410-761-6633, Ext. 5.
