May 12, 2007

Marian H. Sibley, a retired Baltimore County English teacher, died of complications from Alzheimer's disease Thursday at the Broadmead retirement community in Cockeysville. She was 89 and a former Towson resident.

Born Marian Halverson in West Union, Iowa, she moved to Baltimore in the mid-1930s to work for the Social Security Administration. After marrying and raising her children, she earned a bachelor's degree in English from what is now Towson University and a master's in liberal arts from the John Hopkins University.

Before retiring in 1981, she taught English for two decades at what is now Dumbarton Middle School. She also directed the school's newspaper. After her retirement, she helped adults learn to read.

Plans for a memorial service are incomplete.

Survivors include a son, Donald Sibley of Martha's Vineyard, Mass.; a daughter, Arlene Sibley of Bondurant, Wyo.; two sisters, Frances E. Huyser and Valda Mae Vander Waal, both of Pella, Iowa; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Her husband of 64 years, Frank N. Sibley, died in 2004.
