Red Sox update

Boston continues to hold the best record in the American League, and its seven-game lead in the East is the Red Sox's largest ever through games of May 9. Before last night's 8-0 win in Toronto, the Red Sox had the second-best average and team ERA in the league. They have won seven of their past eight games and have scored at least eight runs in each of their past three games. Beckett is one win shy of becoming the fourth pitcher in Red Sox history to start 8-0. He's 2-0 with a 1.80 ERA lifetime against the Orioles, and was part of Boston's two-game sweep at Camden Yards last month. Four of last night's starters are hitting above .300, with second baseman Joey Cora leading the way at .415. Third baseman Mike Lowell (.303) has homered in three consecutive games.
