Public hearings on budget slated

Two public hearings will be held on the fiscal 2008 budget proposed by County Executive John R. Leopold, which calls for schools to receive about $867 million, a $60.6 million increase from last year.

The budget approved by the Board of Education in February requested $941 million, an increase of $135 million.

The hearings will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Old Mill High School and May 14 at the Arundel Center. Speakers are limited to three minutes.

Author to lead writing club

A noted children's author will lead a writing club Thursday at Central Elementary in Edgewater. Barry Louis Polisar will also be at morning assemblies and meet-the-writer programs.

Polisar's newest book is Stolen Man, a chapter book for ages 9 and up that tells the true story of the rebellion on the Amistad slave ship from the point of view of one of the Africans taken into slavery. He is a four-time Parents' Choice Award winner, and began writing and recording songs for children in 1975.

Annapolis native wins design prize

An Annapolis native has won a yearlong evening wear and bridal design competition sponsored by the Importer Support Program of the Cotton Board and managed by Cotton Inc.

Sam Bennett, a senior majoring in fashion design at the Pratt Institute in New York, was required to design evening wear using only cotton fabrics. He will be honored at the Pratt Fashion Show on Tuesday at Manhattan's Gotham Hall. All designs from the competition will be included in the show.
