Play it again -- Tigers 5, Orioles 4

Walks again doom Orioles

Walking the leadoff guy is never recommended, especially in a tie game in the eighth inning. Orioles setup man Danys Baez did it, and it came back to cost the Orioles the game. Baez issued a four-pitch walk to Carlos Guillen, who scored the go-ahead run on pinch hitter Sean Casey's single under the outstretched glove of third baseman Melvin Mora. Placido Polanco added a run-scoring infield single off Baez in the inning, and the Orioles were beaten again.

Loewen leaves

With the news that Jaret Wright will be out of the rotation for the foreseeable future, the last thing the Orioles can afford is an injury to another starter. But Adam Loewen clearly wasn't himself after trainer Richie Bancells and manager Sam Perlozzo made a mound visit with two outs in the fourth inning. Loewen stayed in the game, but perhaps he shouldn't have, as he surrendered an RBI single to Polanco and then a go-ahead two-run homer to Craig Monroe.

Run, Roberts, run

Orioles leadoff man Brian Roberts swiped second in the first inning and again in the fourth, and then stole third in the seventh as part of a double steal. All the steals came against Tigers catcher Ivan Rodriguez, who had thrown out two Orioles, including Roberts once, a night earlier. That gives the second baseman 11 steals in 12 attempts, and ties him for the American League lead in steals with the Texas Rangers' Kenny Lofton.

Up next

Right-hander Steve Trachsel (1-2, 4.13) opposes Tigers left-hander and Orioles nemesis Nate Robertson (2-1, 2.43) in this afternoon's series finale at Comerica Park. In six career starts against the Orioles, Robertson is 3-1 with a 3.11 ERA. He beat the Orioles once this year, holding them to four hits in 7 1/3 shutout innings at Camden Yards on April 10.
