Parents, too, get prom warnings

Glenelg High principal sends out a caution on drinking parties

Students are not the only ones getting lectures about the dangers of underage drinking this prom season.

Karl Schindler, principal at Glenelg High School, sent parents a letter this week warning them about hosting after-prom drinking parties at their homes. Other principals have sent similar letters.

"We're trying to do absolutely everything we can to keep these kids safe," Schindler said. "I felt that I really needed to take this stance and let them know. We need everyone's assistance to keep everybody healthy and safe."

Schindler sent the letters after receiving calls from at least three parents who had learned about other parents who planned to host parties where alcohol would be available.

"[Students] can't get mixed messages," said Schindler, whose school prom is scheduled tomorrow night at Sheraton in Baltimore. "It becomes frustrating to the extent that I need everybody on the same page."

Oakland Mills and Mount Hebron are also scheduled to hold proms tomorrow.

Schindler's letter informed parents that it is illegal for them to serve alcohol to anyone under 21, and that parents can be charged by the police if they serve alcohol to minors.

While discouraging parents from allowing their children to attend parties at hotels, Schindler encourages parents to send their children to the school's after-prom party, which is scheduled at Columbia Gym in Clarksville.

"Our PTSA has worked incredibly hard to make sure we create a good safe place for our kids," Schindler said about the school-sanctioned party. "I just need everyone on the same page here."

Laura Smit, executive director of HC DrugFree, said she was discouraged by the low number of students who attended Long Reach High School's after-prom party at Life Time Fitness in Columbia on Saturday.

Of the 400 Long Reach students who attended the prom, Smith said only 100 attended the school-sponsored party.

"I was wondering where the other 300 kids went," said Smit, who chaperoned the party. "I heard some kids saying it is not cool to go to the [school's] party."

Smit suspected that many students attended private parties and that some of them likely were supervised by parents who allowed the children to drink alcohol.

"There are still parents who provide alcohol and take their [children's car] keys," Smit said. "They think [the children] are safe. I could see that they could feel that is safer. They have the kids in their control. ... We are really discouraging the kids from drinking. If parents would not throw the parties, then kids would attend the [school-sponsored] parties."

Smit commended Schindler and other principals for discouraging parents from hosting drinking parties.

"We would encourage all the parents to say no to these parties and encourage their children to go to the [school-sponsored] party," she said.
