Play it again -- Orioles 5, Blue Jays 2

April 22, 2007

Insurance runs

After the Blue Jays scored once in the top of the sixth to cut their deficit to one, the Orioles came back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning to extend their lead to 5-2. Eight Orioles hitters came to the plate and Chris Gomez and Corey Patterson each got their second hit of the game. Patterson drove in one of the runs with a single, and Miguel Tejada walked with the bases loaded to force home the other run.

Walk on

Starter Adam Loewen continued to have control problems last night. He walked a career-high seven batters, including two in the first inning and three in the sixth, in 5 2/3 innings. Only one of the batters who walked came around to score, but Loewen has walked 19 hitters in 19 1/3 innings over four outings. Loewen twice walked six batters last season.

Double your pleasure

The Orioles' defense helped their pitchers avoid damage by turning four double plays, giving them 18 this season. Middle infielders Tejada and Gomez completed double plays in the first, fourth and seventh innings, and Melvin Mora got one started with no outs in the sixth.

On deck

This afternoon, the Orioles seek their fourth straight win and a sweep of Toronto. Steve Trachsel (0-1, 5.19 ERA) is 3-0 lifetime in four career starts against the Blue Jays, while Gustavo Chacin (2-0, 3.57), who has won his past two outings.
