Harford Friends plans open house

Harford Friends School will hold an open house for prospective students and their families from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. today at its new site in the Highland Commons Building, 708 Highlands Road, Street.

Faculty, staff, students and parents, and members of the board of trustees will introduce the middle school's academics and other programs.

Tours of the school will start every 30 minutes from the gymnasium, where presentations, information and refreshments will be available. Applications for sixth to eighth grades will be accepted.

Elementaries out early Wednesday

Harford County public schools will dismiss elementary school students at 1 p.m. Wednesday for teachers' planning time.

Pre-K, kindergarten sign-up approaches

The Harford County public school system has released prekindergarten and kindergarten guidelines for the 2007-2008 academic year.

The purpose for prekindergarten is to prepare at-risk children for kindergarten. Pre-K children must turn 4 by Sept. 1 of the school year.

Applications for pre-K will be taken from May 4 through the first day of school in August.

Kindergartners must turn 5 by Sept. 1 of the school year. Countywide kindergarten registration starts May 4. It is recommended that parents contact the elementary school in their area by phone before registering their child.

`Kids in Kollege' offered at CCC

From "Alien Invasion" to yoga, the annual Cecil Community College "Kids in Kollege" summer program starting July 9 features a variety of classes for children ages 7 to 12.

Campers may select up to four classes each week. Sessions run from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. weekdays on CCC's North East campus and offer 55 choices in art, crafts, sports, science and computers. Some programs include field trips, guest speakers and demonstrations.

Tuition is $160 per week; before- and after-care is available for an additional fee.

Registration for CCC's Youth Educational Services summer programs is available at Elkton Station, 107 Railroad Ave.; or the North East campus, One Seahawk Drive.

A parent orientation will be held at 6:30 p.m. June 27 in the Technology Center amphitheater on the North East campus.

HEAT center offers college-level classes

Harford County residents can take bachelor's degree-level courses offered by Towson University at the Higher Education Center at HEAT in Aberdeen.

Fall courses will include "Introduction to Bioinformatics," a hybrid course incorporating lectures and online study, with a co-requisite of genetics or biochemistry; "Web-based Programming"; "Principles of Genetics" (with a prerequisite of Biology 201); "Ecology of the Chesapeake Bay" (with a prerequisite of Biology 110 or 202); and "Introduction to Abstract Mathematics."
