Talk with school board members Saturday

The Howard County Board of Education will hold a "Coffee and Conversation" session from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday in the Media Center at Thunder Hill Elementary School, 9357 Mellenbrook Road, Columbia.

The sessions, which are held at schools around the county, provide an opportunity for residents to share a cup of coffee and chat informally with board members. Everyone is welcome.

Blood drive May 5 at interfaith center

Owen Brown Interfaith Center will hold its next blood drive from 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. May 5.

Sign-up in advance is requested. Organizers say more than 50 people have signed up to donate blood, but more are needed.

Participants must be at least age 17, weigh at least 110 pounds, and be in generally good health.

Mural dedication is rescheduled

The dedication of the mosaic mural at Jeffers Hill Elementary School has been rescheduled because of recent weather conditions.

Originally planned for tomorrow, the dedication ceremony now will be held at 4:40 p.m. May 16.

Gallery shop offering `Mother's Day Special'

The Columbia Art Center Gallery Shop will present a Mother's Day Special from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 5. Gifts for mothers will be available and shopping assistants can help with gift selection.

Free gift-wrapping will be offered; refreshments will be served.

The Gallery Shop, at 6100 Foreland Garth in Long Reach Village Center, features affordable artwork by students and faculty of the center.

The shop is open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday.

Around Town`Boot camp' -- The East Columbia 50+ Center at the east Columbia library will offer an exercise "boot camp" from 7 a.m. to 8 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, through May 10. The camp, led by fitness instructor Chris Miller, will focus on strength, resistance and conditioning training and includes calisthenics and an obstacle course. Living right -- Long Reach Community Association will offer "Stepping Out," a six-week session of classes in etiquette, social skills and self-improvement for boys and girls ages 8 to 13. Classes meet from 10 a.m. to noon Saturdays, through May 19, at Stonehouse in Long Reach Village Center.
