Agency, groups seek assistance tomorrow

The Howard County Department of Recreation and Parks, Howard County Conservancy, Howard County Arts Council and Friends of the Patapsco Valley and Heritage Greenway will conduct projects that require volunteers tomorrow in celebration of National and Global Youth Service Day and Earth Day.

The Department of Recreation and Parks will hold a tree-planting and stream-buffer planting project at 9 a.m. at West Friendship Park, 12947 Route 144, West Friendship. Take work gloves and shovels. Registration is not needed.

The Howard County Conservancy invites volunteers to help with stream cleanup, planting trees and shrubs, and maintaining trails from 9 a.m. to noon. Take work gloves and wear sturdy shoes.

The Howard County Arts Council is seeking volunteers to help with its annual fundraising event at Jim Rouse Theatre at Wilde Lake High School, Columbia at 5 p.m. Opportunities are available in the box office, at reception, with raffle ticket sales, as servers and for other tasks.

Friends of the Patapsco Valley and Heritage Greenway need volunteers to pick up trash along stream banks and in streams. Some embedded materials may require digging with shovels; heavy items such as truck tires must be carried to the road.

Help maintain park trails

Patapsco Valley State Park invites volunteers to work with members of the park's trail crew to maintain trails from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday (Earth Day); May 19; June 2 (National Trails Day); July 14; Aug. 18; Sept. 29 (National Public Lands Day); and Oct. 20.

Volunteers must be at least 12 years old and should take gloves, sturdy footwear, a hat, water, safety glasses, sun and insect repellent, snacks and any emergency medications they might need.

Trail work will not be done in rainy weather.

Assistance needed for disaster work

The Volunteer Center Serving Howard County, in cooperation with the Community Emergency Response Network, is recruiting and referring volunteers to local nonprofit and government agencies to help with disaster preparedness and recovery.

An orientation for disaster volunteers will be held from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. May 17 at the Savage branch library, 9525 Durness Lane. A Volunteer Mobilization Center training, in which members of the community will be taught to assist the volunteer center in registering volunteers to help in the event of a disaster, will be held from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. May 2 at the Volunteer Center, 10221 Wincopin Circle, Columbia.

Pregnancy-aid group seeks help

Better BedRest Inc., a nonprofit support, resource and referral service for women placed on bed rest during pregnancy, is seeking telephone volunteers who have had a bed-rest experience or have been close to someone with such an experience.
