Balkan style

The lowdown -- The sound of Balkan Beat Box is created by six musicians who mix dance hall, Gypsy soul and Balkan brass into an energetic live show. Get a taste of the band's stylish vibe Monday night at Towson's Recher Theatre.

Mid-century avant-garde

The lowdown -- With their "He Took Her to a Movie" series, Westnorth Studio and the Jive Social Club promise a different kind of date night. On Wednesday, take your loved one(s) to "Dreaming of Eames," a showing of a couple of short films by Charles and Ray Eames, the mid-century designers who created the "chair of the century." An all-American techno and pre-fab dance party follows.

The lowdown -- If a glass of wine and a round of boccie sound like a fine way to spend a spring afternoon, head to the Highlandtown Wine Festival. Sponsored by the Highlandtown Community Association and Di Pasquale's Italian Market, the festival celebrates home winemaking. For $20, patrons will receive a souvenir wineglass and five wine tastings.
