State Men's Week Ahead

April 18, 2007|By GARY LAMBRECHT

No. 7 NAVY (9-2)

Coming up / / at No. 8 Johns Hopkins, Saturday, 3 p.m.

Comment / / The Midshipmen have lost three straight one-goal decisions to the Blue Jays, including two in overtime, and have not beaten Hopkins since 1974. If William Wallace has another big day on faceoffs, that skid might finally end.

Coming up / / vs. No. 7 Navy, Saturday, 3 p.m.

Comment / / By beating their third top 10 opponent of the season, the Blue Jays would virtually guarantee their 36th consecutive NCAA tournament appearance. Under coach Dave Pietramala, Hopkins is 27-6 in one-goal games, 12-2 in overtime.

No. 9 MARYLAND (8-4)

Coming up / / at Penn, Saturday, 1 p.m.

Comment / / Against unranked opponents, the Terps are averaging 14.5 goals. Against ranked teams, they are scoring 8.6 goals per game. Looks like a rout could be brewing in Philadelphia.

No. 14 LOYOLA (5-4)

Coming up / / vs. Fairfield, Saturday, 1 p.m.

Comment / / With back-to-back losses to Rutgers and Georgetown, an Eastern College Athletic Conference title - and an automatic NCAA tournament bid - appears out of reach. The Greyhounds might have to beat Hopkins on May 5 to reach the postseason.

No. 15 UMBC (7-4)

Coming up / / vs. Vermont, Saturday, 1 p.m.

Comment / / The Retrievers, riding their first three-game winning streak of the year, love walking the tightrope at home. UMBC is 5-1 there, with three wins in overtime.

No. 19 TOWSON (7-4)

Coming up / / at No. 13 Drexel, Saturday, 7 p.m.

Comment / / After blowing a two-goal lead with less than a minute left and losing to visiting Hofstra in overtime Saturday, the Tigers are starting to run out of ways to secure an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament.

Coming up / / vs. St. Joseph's, today, 4 p.m.; at Canisius, Saturday, 11 a.m.

Comment / / The Mount has lost three straight in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play, and has generated only 6.7 goals per game during the slide. That does not bode well for them in the conference tournament.
