A fire that swept through an Ellicott City townhouse killed an unidentified middle-aged man last night, fire officials said.

The blaze in the 3200 block of Sonia Trail in the Ellicott Meadows section of Ellicott City was reported in a 911 call about 5:30 p.m., said William Mould, a spokesman for the Howard County Department of Fire and Rescue Services.

When firefighters arrived, they found flames shooting out of the second and third floors of the three-story frame dwelling, Mould said.

The victim was pulled from the kitchen and pronounced dead at the scene, Mould said. The victim was the only person in the house at the time of the fire.

The victim's identity was withheld pending notification of next of kin, Mould said.

The two-alarm fire was brought under control in about 20 minutes, he said.
