Officer hit, Del. man shot

April 17, 2007

A man who was shot Sunday after police say he ran down a state trooper in Cecil County remained in critical condition last night at Maryland Shock Trauma Center.

Scott L. Perry, 49, of the first block of Wenark Drive in Newark, Del., had been flown to Shock Trauma on Sunday night after the shooting.

Police say Perry was driving a 1990 GMC pickup truck in the area of Middle Road and Blue Ball Road near Elkton about 6:45 p.m. Sunday when he refused to stop for Trooper 1st Class Robert S. Nitz of the North East Barracks. Nitz was trying to stop the driver for having tags registered to another vehicle, state police said.

The driver led the trooper on an 85-mph chase, then tried to make a U-turn in the 2800 block of Blue Ball Road, state police said. Nitz signaled for the driver to stop, but, witnesses said, he drove at the trooper, according to police. Nitz was thrown onto the hood of the pickup.

Nitz fired at Perry, who was struck in the head and upper torso, police said.

Nitz was treated at Shock Trauma and released Sunday night. He has been placed on routine administrative leave, police said.
