National Volunteer Week, April 15-21, is an opportunity for Neighbor Ride and various other nonprofit organizations to recognize and appreciate their volunteers.

Neighbor Ride is a volunteer-based supplemental transportation program that is making a world of difference in Howard County. The program's goal is to help seniors, age 60 and over, maintain a good quality of life by providing friendly and reliable door-to-door transportation for medical appointments, religious services, educational pursuits, recreational and social events, exercise classes, and other day-to-day activities. These rides are provided and coordinated by the volunteers of Neighbor Ride.

The volunteers of Neighbor Ride truly are the heart and soul of the organization. The services we've been providing the community since November of 2004 would not be what they are without the dedication of our volunteers. Neighbor Ride volunteers are outstanding individuals providing enthusiasm, compassion and flexibility to their community and its residents. Our many passengers are constantly grateful of the service provided and the warm hearts and gentle hands of the volunteers that assist them in their travels.

I am in awe of the many relationships that have been built because of the rides being provided by such outstanding volunteers. It isn't just a service the volunteers are providing, but a service with compassion and interest in the well-being of the individual receiving the ride.

Having worked in our office, I've had the opportunity to chat with many passengers who speak so highly of the drivers, the coordinators and the service. I hope that during National Volunteer Week, these dedicated volunteers will continue to feel the appreciation they deserve.

I am honored to be affiliated with such an amazing group of people. Thank you to all the volunteers at Neighbor Ride, you truly are making a world of difference in the lives of Howard County seniors!
