SOUND CHECK

this week's highlights

April 12, 2007

Aqualung -- 9:30 Club / Aqualung isn't a band. It's the name British singer-songwriter Matt Hales says he gave the music he's been writing since 2002. On his Web site, Hales calls himself the music's "legal guardian." His latest album, Memory Man, has drawn comparisons to Coldplay and John Mayer. Singer-songwriter Sara Bareilles also performs. Doors open at 7:30 p.m. Monday at the 9:30 Club, 815 V St. N.W., Washington, D.C. Tickets are $20. Call 800-955-5566 or go to tickets.com.

Andre Rieu and his Johann Strauss Orchestra -- 1st Mariner Arena / Dutch violinist Andre Rieu and his orchestra have twice won the World Music Award. Rieu wants his live performances to be a fun experience that reflects the joy he finds in classical music. See for yourself when they come to town next week. The show begins at 8 p.m. Monday at 1st Mariner Arena, 201 W. Baltimore St. Tickets are $40-$65. Call 410-547-SEAT or go to ticketmaster.com.

Umphrey's McGee -- 9:30 Club / Progressive rock act Umphrey's McGee describes its latest double-disc release, The Bottom Half, as "a spontaneous follow-up to their spring 2006 release Safety in Numbers." The band counts Yes and King Crimson among its influences, and some have compared the band to Phish. Electro-rock artists Brothers Past will also perform. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. Saturday at the 9:30 Club, 815 V St. N.W., Washington, D.C. Tickets are $20. Call 800-955-5566 or go to tickets.com.
