An Aberdeen Proving Ground soldier convicted in February of stealing a car with the owner's 5-year-old son in the back seat was sentenced yesterday to 30 years in prison.

Brandon Lee Taylor, 19, who was a private-in-training with the 143rd Ordnance Battalion, stole a car July 3 last year from a gas station in the 1700 block of Hanson Road in Edgewood and crashed into a utility pole. Prosecutors said Taylor was attempting to flee the state to avoid an overseas deployment. The owner of the vehicle jumped onto the side of the vehicle and was injured in the crash.

Harford Circuit Judge Stephen M. Waldron sentenced Taylor, an Oregon resident, to 70 years in prison, with all but 30 years suspended.
