River Hill plans candidates forum April 16

The River Hill Community Association will hold a candidates forum at 7:30 p.m. April 16 at Claret Hall in River Hill Village Center, 6020 Daybreak Circle.

Residents will have an opportunity to meet candidates for the community association's board, Barbara Wertman and Frank Saletel, and the candidate for Columbia Council representative from River Hill, Michael Cornell.

The forum's moderator will be the River Hill Election Committee.

Village elections will be held from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. April 21 at the Columbia Gym, and from 10:15 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Claret Hall.

Absentee ballots will be available at Claret Hall through April 20; they must be submitted by midnight that night.

Help sought -- Humane Society of Washington County asks residents of Washington, Frederick and Howard counties to help with a rehabilitation effort for more than 70 horses impounded by the society last year because of neglect. Also, alfalfa is needed for horses that are being rehabilitated at Days End Farm Horse Rescue in Lisbon. 301-733-2060, Ext. 237.

Fitness, wellness -- Glenwood Community Center, operated by Howard County Department of Recreation and Parks, offers fitness and weight areas, a three-lane walking and jogging track and a gymnasium with two courts suitable for basketball, volleyball and other activities. The center also features an arts-and-crafts activity room, a group exercise and dance room and meeting rooms that are available for parties, weddings and other rentals. The center also offers personal training services and an individualized exercise program. A medical clearance form is required. Fees vary according to plan. Massage therapy and reflexology are also to be offered. Appointments are available between 5 p.m. and 9 p.m. Tuesdays. Prices range from $35 to $85. The center, which opened Oct. 31 and hopes to attract patrons from Columbia as well as western Howard County, is at 2400 Route 97, Cooksville. 410-313-4840.

Seniors dance -- Howard County Department of Recreation and Parks will sponsor a ballroom and Latin line dancing class, for those ages 55 and older, from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at Glenwood Community Center. Beginners and experienced dancers are invited to dance to big-band sounds, oldies, Latin and pop. The dances are designed for solo dancing; steps and patterns can also be used for partner dancing. Couples and singles are welcome. Participants should wear leather- or smooth-soled shoes; sneakers and backless shoes are not appropriate. The cost is $28. 410-313-7320 or 410-313-7279.

Volksmarch -- The Columbia Volksmarch Club will hold a Spring Saturday Walk this week that is to begin at Waverly Elementary School, 10220 Wetherburn Road. The self-paced walk will be on sidewalks in the village of Waverly and will include the Historic Waverly Mansion in Marriottsville. Walkers can choose a 5K (3.1-mile) or 10K (6.2-mile) trail.
