PTA Council seeks nominations

The PTA Council of Howard County is accepting nominations of members to serve in executive positions for the 2007-2008 school year.

Nominations are invited for president; executive vice president; vice president of issues; vice president of operations; treasurer; recording secretary and corresponding secretary.

Nominees must be local PTA members who have served for at least a year on a local PTA executive board.

Autism Expo 2007 to be held Saturday

Autism Expo 2007, an information-sharing forum for parents of special-needs children and others, will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at Howard Community College, 10901 Little Patuxent Parkway, Columbia.

Behavior specialist Dr. Vincent J. Carbone of the Carbone Clinic in New York will be the keynote speaker. Dr. Regina Carney of the Duke Center for Human Genetics will discuss current research. Other speakers will discuss a spectrum of characteristics of autism, a neurological disorder that affects social interaction and communication skills.

Admission to the expo is $59.95.

School board to meet Thursday

The county Board of Education will hold a regularly scheduled meeting at 4 p.m. Thursday in the boardroom at the Department of Education, 10910 Route 108, Ellicott City.

The afternoon session and an evening session, which starts at 7:30 p.m., will begin with a public forum during which members of the public can address the board on any topic for which there is no formal hearing process. Sign-up in advance is preferred.

During the evening session, the board will hold a public hearing on revisions to Policy 1501, Acceptable Use of Computer Technology.

Those who want to testify at the hearing are asked to limit the presentation to three minutes, and to provide 15 written copies of their testimony at the time of the hearing.

Gifted-talented testing scheduled for May 5

Gifted and Talented Program testing for children in grades five through seven who do not attend a public school but plan to enter Howard County middle schools in August will be held from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. May 5.

Testing will be held at Faulkner Ridge Center, 10598 Marble Faun Court, Columbia. The registration deadline is April 27.

Registration materials are available at middle school guidance offices and the Gifted and Talented Program office, 410-313-6800.

Student film fest to be held Friday

The third Howard County Film Festival, showing original films made by students, will be held at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Howard Community College's Smith Theatre, 10901 Little Patuxent Parkway, Columbia.

Door prizes will be awarded.

The films are suitable for adult, high school and middle school audiences.

Essay contest entries invited

Howard County seventh-graders are invited to enter a Sherlock Holmes Essay Contest sponsored by Watson's Tin Box, an organization of Holmes fans, in partnership with the county library and the county school system.

Contestants are to read Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's The Adventure of the Speckled Band and write an analytical essay about it.

The entry deadline is May 4. Prizes will be awarded at an event to be held at 7 p.m. June 7 at the east Columbia library, 6600 Cradlerock Way, Columbia.
