The Rev. Thomas Smith Sr., a Social Security Administration claims examiner and an associate minister, died of coronary artery disease March 29 at Northwest Hospital Center. The longtime Woodlawn resident was 78.

Mr. Smith was born in Baltimore and raised on West Mulberry Street. He was a 1947 graduate of Douglass High School and attended Maryland Baptist Center School of Religion during the late 1940s.

He served in the Army as a records clerk from 1950 to 1952.

Mr. Smith began working for the Social Security Administration in the early 1950s and at his death was a claims examiner at the agency's Woodlawn headquarters.

Mr. Smith was ordained a Baptist minister in 1958 and earned a bachelor's degree in history from what is now Morgan State University in 1960.

Mr. Smith was an associate minister at Perkins Square Baptist Church and since 1968 had been an associate minister at Mount Moriah Baptist Church.

He was a member of Phi Beta Sigma fraternity and the American Legion. He enjoyed camping, walking and shopping with his wife of 41 years, the former Alvis Anthony.

Services were held Wednesday at his church.

Also surviving are a son, Thomas Smith Jr. of Chambersburg, Pa.; a daughter, Fayth Elizabeth Smith of Woodstock; and seven grandchildren.
